Sleep Medicine
Feeling tired? You’re not alone. More than one third of adults in Arkansas get less than the recommended seven hours of sleep a night, according to the CDC. Even those who report getting enough sleep often rated their sleep quality as fair or poor.
Our bodies need healthy, restorative sleep to function properly. Lack of sleep, poor quality sleep and untreated sleep disorders are tied to many diseases, including diabetes, high blood pressure and even heart attack or stroke.
Signs and Symptoms
Understanding when to seek help with poor sleep quality is essential. Sleep specialists with Northwest Physicians diagnose and treat a wide variety of sleep disorders including insomnia, narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome and obstructive sleep apnea. If you’re experiencing the following symptoms on a regular basis, it might be time to talk with your physician about a sleep study.
- Snoring
- Excessive daytime sleepiness
- Irritability
- Itchy, tingly sensations in your legs while resting
- Morning headaches
- Inability to concentrate
- Forgetfulness
- Morning dry mouth or sore throat
- Loss of energy
- Mood or behavior changes
- Night-time heartburn
What is a sleep study?
A sleep study is used to diagnose potential sleep disorders. During a sleep study, patients stay overnight in Northwest Health’s sleep center while breathing, oxygen levels, sleep patterns, heart rate and brain activity is measured. Monitoring is done with several sensors on various parts of your body. We encourage patients to make themselves as comfortable as possible during the study and to mimic night-time routines when possible.
