Sports Medicine
Sports medicine covers the treatment and prevention of injuries and other health problems related to sports and exercise. Sports medicine providers are trained to prevent and treat bone, joint and muscle injuries, and focus on non-surgical treatment of these conditions to help patients maximize functionality while minimizing time away from sports, work or school. These specialists guide appropriate referrals to athletic trainers and physical and occupational therapists when exercise/rehabilitation plans are necessary, and when surgery is required, can perform (if an orthopedic surgeon) or expedite referrals to an orthopedic surgeon.
